Pharmacology
Third generation cephalosporin – bactericidal antibiotic
Contraindications
General
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics and possibly to penicillin related antibiotics because of the potential for cross reactivity.
- Dosage may need to be adjusted in patients with kidney disease.
- Use with caution in patients with seizure disorders.
- Use with caution in breeding, lactating or pregnant animals as safety has not been established.
General
- Extra label use of cephalosporin antibiotics in food animals is prohibited by the FDA.
Adverse Effects
General
- Vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite are possible side effects.
- Hypersensitivity reactions can occur-rash, fever, blood changes, anaphylaxis.
Interactions

Antacid
- May decrease absorption of cefpodoxime.
H-2 Antagonist
- May decrease absorption of cefpodoxime.
Drug Interactions
Omeprazole
- May decrease absorption of cefpodoxime.

- Oral tablets – 100 and 200 mg; Simplicef® and generic in bottles of 100 tablets and 250 tablets (Simplicef® only)
Veterinary – General
- Tablet – 100 and 200 mg in btls of 100 tabs; Simplicef ®. Approved for use in dogs.
