Contraindications

General
  • No known contraindications at the time of publication.

Adverse Effects

General
  • Hypersensitivity reactions are possible.
  • Local toxicity – itchy eyelid, swelling and reddened conjunctiva are also possible.
  • Pupil dilation may also occur.

Comments

Similar spectrum to gentamicin.
Commercially available ointments and solutions are sometimes not concentrated enough to achieve therapeutic effects and fortified concentrations of greater than 14.5 mg/mL are compunded for use.
Ocular levels can be increased by subconjunctival injections but systemic use does not appear to be benficial in ocular infection.
